Two-dimensional Design

The two-dimensional realm exists in the spacial plane of being relatively flat; through exploration of design principles and ever-progressing complex grid structures, one can break from the norm of just being another flat piece. This is one of those class where the hands-on experience pays off with the use of cold-press board and Sumi inks for the black and white designs, and acrylic paints for color theory later in the semester.

A course focused on the study of two-dimensional design concepts and their applications, which emphasizes the Principles of Art and Elements of Design required of all artists; color was also explored, and precision was always the name of the game with this course.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  • Demonstrate an intelligent use of design.
  • Recognize both the objective and subjective qualities of art and art making.
  • Present successful samples of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design.
  • Understand color theory including color relativity and interaction.
